Cirigüeña / Chelidonium majus

La cirigüeña es una planta muy común en Asturias. Tiene un jugo cáustico de un color amarillo que mancha las manos en cuanto lo tocas, por eso fue mi primera opción cuando decidí experimentar con tintes naturales.
Chelidonium is a very common plant in Asturias. It's been used for centuries to treat many skin infections thanks to the latex it contains. It has a strong yellow colour that stains your skin as soon as you touch it. That's why this was me go-to plant when I started experimenting with natural dyes

Preparé la tela de algodón (lienzo moreno) en un baño de agua y vinagre y al mismo tiempo extraje el color de la planta hirviendo las hojas y tallos durante una hora.
I mordanted my muslim with vinegar and water and, at the same time, I extracted the colour by simmering the plant for an hour

 Sumergí en el líquido dos trozos de tela, una la dejé en reposo unas doce horas, la otra la dejé durante cinco días. El resultado es muy diferente: la primera tiene un color amarillo, la segunda se fue oxidando hasta teñirse de un color caqui.
I chose two strips of muslim to dye and I simmered both for an hour in the liquid. After that I left one of the strips on the dye bath for 12 hours; I left the other strip on the bath for five days!. The results are absolutely stunning. The first one is a clear yellow, the second one oxydated into a khaki
